Creating a cosy home when you have stone flooring

It’s a common misconception that when you have stone flooring, your home won’t look or feel cosy and will potentially be colder than if you were to have other types of flooring. At Whitehall, we get asked a lot of questions around this topic and we are pleased to let you know that stone flooring does not necessarily mean a cold home!

Stone and underfloor heating

Stone flooring works exceptionally with underfloor heating and although stone may take longer to heat up initially in comparison to other flooring types, it actually retains its heat really well, therefore, it can be considered more efficient. Once your room has reached optimal temperature and the underfloor heating has been turned off, your stone will hold its heat for longer than a traditional radiator, ensuring that your home stays cosy and warmer for longer.

Find out more about stone flooring and underfloor heating here and why we think it is an investment that you won’t regret in the long term!

Add rugs and other soft furnishings

If you’re worried about your stone flooring lacking a cosy look, there really is no need to worry! Luckily, a cosier look can be achieved really easily by adding a few items to compliment your flagstones. Soft furnishings are a really great way to add to the whole aesthetic and ambience of your home, complimenting your stone brilliantly. Think about adding a rug or cushions and throws on furniture to enhance a cosy feel. Different textures can also help in adding an element of cosiness to your home.

Wood burner/fireplace

There are many reasons why you may choose to have a beautiful wood burning stove or a classic cast iron fireplace in your home. Their primary purpose is very obvious, and that is to provide you with heat and comfort, which is vital for making your house a cosy place for you and your family to enjoy. A fireplace or wood burner is a wonderful addition to any home, no matter what type of flooring you may have, however, we think stone flooring and a fireplace are sure to be the perfect match, creating an aesthetic like no other, due to the natural elements of both features.

Think about the colour of your stone

If you are wanting to create a cosier feel to your home, thinking about the colour of the stone is a good place to start as choosing a stone that has warmer undertones could help with this. If you are looking for a lighter coloured stone with warm tones, why not take a look at our Seashell Stone which will add both warmth and beauty to your home with its natural, creamy colouring. If you prefer a darker colour stone that still ensures warmth and cosiness, why not consider our Old Farmhouse Green? This stone is a firm favourite with existing customers of ours, offering a rustic, timeless appearance with its greeny brown undertones, tumbled edges and brushed surface. We recommend ordering some free samples to give you a really good idea of what the stone looks like in person, you’ll also get an idea of the textures. Order your samples here.

At Whitehall, we are firm believers there's nothing like natural beauty when it comes to stone flooring and we think that stone can be your best ally when creating a cosy home. Need some inspiration? Here are some of our favourite cosy homes, featuring our stone flooring:
